5-Hour Energy Unveils Caffeinated Hot Sauce

by Ella

If you’ve ever thought, “This taco is great, but it could be a little messier,” you’re in luck.

Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, the energy drink that keeps you semi-awake during conference calls now has a little…spicier flavor. Indiana-based 5-Hour Energy has just launched a limited-edition Mango Habanero Hot Sauce—created in partnership with Taco John’s, the fast-food chain known for its “Western Tex-Mex” staples like soft-shell tacos and potato oles. The idea? Combining the sweet and spicy flavors of mango and habanero peppers with an extra energy boost for a flavor that’s portable, spicy, and—technically—caffeinated.

If a caffeinated hot sauce sounds a little too far-fetched, know that this isn’t the first time 5-Hour Energy has played with fire.

Last summer, the brand teamed up with the National Food Laboratory to launch a limited-edition Vitality BBQ Sauce. The sauce has the same peach-mango flavor as the original energy drink, but is caffeinated (because, of course, it is), with about 60 milligrams per serving.

“After the success of our 5-Hour Energy-inspired Vitality BBQ Sauce last summer, we knew we were onto something special,” said Leah Key, president and COO of Living Essentials, the makers of the energy drink. “Partnering with Taco John’s for this ‘sequel’ was the perfect opportunity to connect with fans in a new and exciting way.”

The hot sauce contains 200 milligrams of caffeine and comes in a portable, two-ounce bottle, a shot glass, and an affordable price. Perhaps that comes in handy, considering that about a quarter of millennial and Gen Z diners bring their own hot sauce. It sounds specific, but it also makes sense, somehow.

“This on-the-go sauce brings the vibrant, spice-filled flavors of Cinco de Mayo to life no matter how or where you celebrate,” added Kevin Flaherty, chief marketing officer at Taco John’s. “This sauce is about more than just how spicy it is, it’s about capturing the adventurous spirit of our fans and bringing everyone together in a new culinary experience.”

For those seeking maximum mayhem, it pairs with a 5-Hour Energy drink in the “Spicy Mango Five” flavor.

Starting April 28, the sauce will be free with the purchase of a Spicy Mango punch or with a Taco John’s “No Siesta Fiesta” meal at participating locations around Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City and Boston. The meal comes with six soft-shell chicken tacos, two medium hash browns and a bottle of hot sauce.

Will this be the condiment of the summer? Hard to say. But it might be the most refreshing experience you’ll ever have while eating a taco. And honestly, that feels like an accomplishment in itself.
