A New Protein Popcorn Just Launched—From Khloe Kardashian

by Ella

If you’re one of those naysayers who thinks the Kardashian-Jenner clan is famous for no reason, you’ve likely overlooked the fact that their primary talent doesn’t lie in the creative arts — instead, the family is filled with business and marketing geniuses, and they’ve launched plenty of startups to prove it.

From Kylie Jenner’s lip kits that pretty much defined the makeup industry in 2015 to Kim Kardashian’s shapewear and clothing line Skims, the sisters have worked hard to build their business portfolios and public personas. They’ve also branched out into beverages, like Kendall Jenner’s 818 Tequila and Kylie’s canned cocktail line Sprinter.

Now, one member of the family is getting into food.

Khloé Kardashian today announced the launch of Khloud Protein Popcorn, and the snack lives up to its name and is a steal. Made with whole-grain corn kernels grown in Nebraska, Khloud is non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, seed-oil-free, and contains 7 grams of protein per serving.

“For me, snacks should be simple, delicious, and fun to share with family and friends. That’s what inspired Khloud,” Kardashian told Food & Wine. “I didn’t want it to look like your average ‘protein snack,’ I wanted something that tasted great, was simple and convenient, and made with real, non-GMO ingredients.”

The popcorn itself isn’t the key to this snack’s high protein content. After the kernels are popped and lightly coated in olive oil, they’re sprinkled with what the brand calls “Khloud powder.” This proprietary powder is a blend of flavorings and a protein powder made from milk protein isolate.

Simply put, milk protein isolate is a concentrated form of the protein found in milk. It’s typically extracted from skim milk, which is removed of all non-protein components of the milk through a process like ultrafiltration.

Milk protein powder sounds like a natural fit for a cheesy snack, so naturally one of the three flavors of Khloud Protein Popcorn is White Cheddar. There are two more flavors to choose from: Simple Olive Oil Sea Salt and Sweet & Salty Popcorn.

For those who don’t follow the Kardashian world, the decision to launch protein popcorn may be a bit unexpected. Fortunately, I follow all things Kardashian, and Khloé’s food branding fits in with her identity as a mom and avid athlete.

Parents concerned about their kids’ protein intake may find popcorn an effective way to help them get more macronutrients. Plus, parents focused on building muscle can add popcorn to their arsenal of protein-rich snacks that go beyond the average shake and energy bar.

As Khloé told Food & Wine, “When we were coming up with the vision for Khloud, we thought, why not make the perfect snack do more?”

Seven grams of protein may not sound like much, but this isn’t a meal replacement—it’s a snack. It’s just one way to get some protein in. If you’re a popcorn fan, this one has a much higher protein content than many other ready-to-eat popcorns on the market. For example, fan-favorite popcorn brand SkinnyPop has just 2 grams of protein in each 100-calorie single-serve bag.

Khloud will be available nationwide, at Target stores across the U.S. starting April 29

Popcorn likely won’t be the only exciting product from Khloud. Khloud said she’s looking forward to more delicious products from the brand, noting, “We have big plans for the future. We’re going to stay focused on snacking, but we’re going to expand into new categories. I think there’s a huge space for us to redefine everyday snacking, and I’m really excited about that.”

But for now, mark your calendars and stock up, and the next time you go to the movies, you’ll have a delicious option that will help you meet your protein goals while enjoying the movie.
