New Study Suggests Keto Diet May Reduce Dementia Risk in Younger Individuals

Gino Cortopassi, one of the study’s authors, notes that while the data supports the idea of the ketogenic diet, particularly beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), delaying mild cognitive impairment and potentially Alzheimer’s disease, it does not definitively indicate a cure.


Alzheimer’s disease stands as the leading cause of dementia, affecting nearly a million individuals in the UK alone. To delve deeper into their previous findings, researchers subjected animal models of Alzheimer’s disease to a ketogenic diet regimen for seven months. Throughout this period, cognitive memory and synaptic plasticity were evaluated to gauge the adaptability of neuronal connections.


Results revealed a notable increase in circulating BHB levels following consumption of ketogenic meals by both male and female mice compared to the control group. Furthermore, examination of the brains of keto-fed mice unveiled significant improvements in the brain’s memory storage mechanisms, offering promise for potentially delaying Alzheimer’s symptoms.


Although the findings are promising, it’s essential to approach the ketogenic diet with caution. Individuals considering adopting this dietary approach are urged to consult with their healthcare provider beforehand, particularly if they have pre-existing medical conditions that may be impacted by dietary changes. While the keto diet shows potential in mitigating dementia risk, further research, including human trials, is warranted to validate these preliminary findings and ascertain its efficacy in clinical settings.
