From exes to entrepreneurs, the duo behind Two Spoons Creamery are capitalizing on the “healthier” food craze with high-protein, zero-sugar, GLP-1-compliant ice cream
If you’ve been paying attention to the food and beverage space lately, you’ve probably noticed a clear shift: Brands are racing to meet consumer demand for low- or no-sugar healthier options, while industry giants like PepsiCo are aggressively acquiring health-conscious brands. But there’s one indulgence that seems to have remained taboo, untouched by the health-conscious mindset championed by Gen Z: ice cream.
That is, until now.
Meet Two Spoons Creamery, a high-protein, zero-added-sugar ice cream shop in West Hollywood that proudly touts itself as “GLP-1 compliant.” If that sounds too good to be true, the story behind it is just as surprising, as Two Spoons was co-founded by former friends Rich Ferreira and Gabe Zichermann, who are still friends.
Love may not be meant to be, but healthier ice cream certainly is—especially since Ferreira was struggling to stick to a keto diet and couldn’t find ice cream that tasted good enough to sustain his diet pills. He and Zichermann got to work, and spent a year developing the perfect “Rocky Road.”
Today, Two Spoons offers the high-protein Rocky Road flavor, along with other patent-pending flavors like Strawberry Cream, Caramel Swirl, and Fudge Brownie. Each box contains 30 grams of protein and is fortified with allulose, a low-calorie sweetener that has been shown to naturally stimulate the release of GLP-1.
“I think most food and beverage brands see GLP-1 as a threat to their business,” Zichermann told Athletech News. “But considering 12% of the U.S. population is taking it, and up to 25% want to take it, it seems a little unwise not to serve these consumers. And I know better than most that GLP-1 users have specific nutritional needs. We need more protein, we should cut back on sugar, and since we can eat less overall, we want more satisfying nutrition.”
As Zichermann points out, diet pills like Ozempic and Wegovy present a major opportunity for food and snack brands to deliver the right macronutrients and experiences.
“GLP-1 users are not dieters; they are the pickiest eaters,” Zichermann added. “Products like Two Spoons ice cream that combine flavor, texture and nutrition meet their needs.”
Two Spoons has secured financing and retail partners ahead of its official launch. Consumers can also order the ice cream online.
“We have several new flavors coming out later this year, and we’re very excited about that,” Ferreira told ATN. “Some flavors are bold, others are nostalgic, but all stay true to our commitment to creating products that ‘make you feel good.’”
