XLB Announces Closure of Portland Location After Eight Years

by Ella

XLB, a beloved Portland restaurant known for its Chinese comfort food and xiao long baos, will be closing its North Williams Avenue location after eight successful years. The restaurant’s co-owner, Linh Tran, shared the news in a heartfelt community newsletter, confirming that the closure will take place on April 20.

A Message of Gratitude from Co-Owner Linh Tran

In the newsletter, Tran expressed deep appreciation for the community’s support over the years. “This decision was not made lightly, and we are incredibly grateful for the support, laughter, and memories we’ve shared with all of you,” Tran wrote. “Serving this community delicious Chinese comfort food has been an honor, and we cannot thank you enough for being part of our journey.”

Tran went on to thank the restaurant’s customers, whether they visited for a quick meal or celebrated milestones at XLB. “We invite you to visit us one last time before we say goodbye. Until then, from the bottom of our hearts — thank you for your support, kindness, and love.”

A Taste of XLB’s Menu

Since its opening in January 2017, XLB has been known for its array of steamed and soup dumplings, including favorites like Shanghai pork and shrimp noodles, beef ho fun, five-spice popcorn chicken, and Szechuan-style long beans. The restaurant became a go-to spot for comfort food lovers in Portland, earning a loyal following.

Founding and Legacy of XLB

XLB was founded by chefs Jasper Shen and Linh Tran. Shen previously co-founded Aviary, another Portland favorite, in 2011 alongside his wife, Katherine Whitehead, and the late chef Sarah Pliner. Aviary won a Restaurant of the Year award from Willamette Week, a significant achievement in the Portland dining scene. Tran joined Aviary in 2013 as a chef before teaming up with Shen to open XLB.

In 2020, the duo opened a second XLB location on 21st and Raleigh, further expanding their reach in Portland’s vibrant food community.

The closing of XLB marks the end of a memorable chapter in Portland’s restaurant scene, but the restaurant’s legacy will continue to resonate with its devoted patrons.
