New research from the University of Florida emphasizes the importance of diet in lung cancer prevention, particularly focusing on reducing sugar intake. The study suggests that glycogen, a form of glucose stored in the body after consuming sugary foods, may play a significant role in the development of lung cancer.

Glycogen: The “Sweet Tooth” of Cancer

The research team describes glycogen as a “giant lollipop for cancer’s sweet tooth,” indicating its potential contribution to lung cancer progression. Ramon Sun, Director of the Center for Advanced Spatial Biomolecule Research at the University of Florida, stated, “Lung cancer has not traditionally been thought of as a dietary-related disease.” While diet is often linked to cancers like pancreatic and liver cancer, lung cancer has not been as closely associated with dietary factors.

Study Findings: Diet’s Impact on Tumor Growth

Published in Nature Metabolism on March 11, the study is the first of its kind to examine the connection between diet and lung cancer at a National Cancer Institute-certified cancer center. Researchers fed mice a sugary Western-style diet and found an increase in tumor growth, linking higher sugar intake to accelerated cancer progression.

Abass Oduola, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Washington University in St. Louis, highlighted the significance of the study in identifying glycogen as a potential target for future cancer therapies. “Imagine a future where we could starve cancer cells by cutting off their glycogen supply,” he shared on social media.

This breakthrough points to the possibility of new treatment options that could disrupt the energy supply of cancer cells, offering a promising avenue for future research in lung cancer therapies.
