June 2025 – James Beard Award-nominated pastry chef Claudia Martinez is preparing to launch her latest culinary venture: Bar ANA, a late-night dessert and cocktail bar, opening in June in the former El Bar space below El Ponce. This innovative new spot promises to redefine late-night dining with a unique combination of gourmet desserts and expertly crafted cocktails, staying open until 2 a.m., a rarity in the city.
The concept is the brainchild of Martinez, who will run the bar alongside her business partner at ANA Hospitality Group, with additional support from Rosa Thurnher, the owner of El Ponce, La Palapa, and Tiendita.
A Place for Relaxed, Late-Night Indulgence
For Claudia Martinez, Bar ANA is not just another late-night hangout, but rather an environment where people can unwind and indulge in delicious treats in a relaxed atmosphere. “It’s a place to take your date after dinner,” Martinez says. “I always thought it would be cool to have a space that’s a late-night spot that’s not a club or a place to get shots. If you wanna come in at 1 a.m. and get a daiquiri and not have to dress up for it, we want it to be that kind of place.”
The name Bar ANA is derived from the initials of Martinez’s family members, adding a personal touch to this exciting new venture.
A Sweet and Savory Menu
Martinez is known for her stunningly elaborate desserts, often incorporating tropical fruits into her dishes. At Bar ANA, guests will find a selection of five seasonal desserts, featuring indulgent items such as Venezuelan chocolate mousse with passion fruit, doughnuts filled with fruit compote, and house-made ice creams. In addition, there will be savory pastries to complement the sweet options.
When it comes to drinks, the menu will offer a range of expertly crafted cocktails, including Martinez’s favorite drink – the daiquiri. Other offerings will include espresso martinis, wine, and non-alcoholic options, ensuring that there’s something for everyone.
A Daytime Coffee and Pastry Experience
While the evenings will focus on desserts and cocktails, Bar ANA will also open during the day, offering a variety of fresh morning pastries and coffee. Martinez’s goal is to support the city’s top baristas with a residency program, allowing them to showcase their talents while also incorporating the coffee into cocktails at night. The concept is inspired by the now-closed Chocolate Bar in Decatur, which paired craft chocolates with coffee and cocktails.
Music, Atmosphere, and Exclusive Experiences
The atmosphere at Bar ANA will be just as unique as its offerings. Inspired by the vibes of New York’s Las’ Lap, the bar will feature a carefully curated soundtrack of nostalgic, lo-fi beats, Afro beats, meringue, salsa, and old-school hip hop, creating an inviting and nostalgic environment.
Additionally, a private tasting section will be available for special reservations, offering guests the chance to enjoy a tasting menu paired with wine or cocktails. This intimate experience is perfect for those looking to indulge in a refined culinary journey.
A Passionate Approach to Pairing
Martinez’s love for pairing drinks with desserts is evident in her planned menu. She enjoys pairing daiquiris with fruit tarts, Fernet with high spice cakes like a spiced cake with cream cheese frosting, and Champagne with just about everything. One of her current favorite pairings in the city is the blue cheese and mascarpone dessert at Madeira Park with a glass of sherry.
Hours of Operation
Bar ANA will open Thursday through Monday, with daytime hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and evening service from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. This schedule ensures that patrons can enjoy a morning coffee, a leisurely pastry, or indulge in decadent late-night desserts and cocktails.
With its unique concept, passion for creativity, and focus on pairing desserts with cocktails, Bar ANA is set to become a must-visit destination for dessert lovers and night owls alike.
