Dominican chef Joayda Herrera has earned a prestigious silver medal in the Signature Street Food category at the 2024 Italian Cuisine Championship, held in Rimini, Italy. The event, organized by the Italian Federation of Chefs (FIC) and recognized by Worldchefs, brought together over 500 chefs from around the world, competing from February 16 to 18.
Herrera’s Savory Creation
Herrera stood out with her inventive dish—a savory donut inspired by the traditional flavors of Molise, a region in central Italy. The donut featured a slow-cooked mix of pork, beef, and sausages, complemented by a rich tomato sauce. Adding a modern twist, Herrera and her team incorporated crispy pork rind, using a contemporary cooking technique to elevate the dish’s texture and flavor.
A Proud Moment for Dominican Cuisine
Competing alongside two colleagues, Herrera expressed her pride in representing the Dominican Republic on the international stage. She celebrated the achievement, highlighting that with dedication and passion, Dominicans can succeed globally in the culinary world.
While the gold medal was awarded to the French team, Herrera and her Italian teammates secured silver. A competitor from another country took home the bronze.
A Global Culinary Event
The Italian Cuisine Championship took place during the “Beer & Food Attraction” expo, which marks its ninth edition in 2024. The event continues to be a significant platform for showcasing global culinary talents, cementing its reputation as a key fixture in the international food scene.
