A new community kitchen is set to open in Sunbury next month, aimed at addressing the increasing demand for food relief in the area.
Sunbury’s Growing Need for Food Support
The kitchen, an initiative of the non-profit organization Give Until It Hurts, will operate every Wednesday evening from the Sunbury Youth Centre. The opening is scheduled for March 12.
Garnet Jacob, a social worker with Give Until It Hurts, explained that the idea for the new kitchen arose after discussions with people attending another food relief service in Sunbury. It became clear that there was a gap in services during the middle of the week.
“There’s an increased need because there’s only one kitchen operating on Mondays, and the Salvation Army runs a service on Friday afternoons. But there’s nothing in between,” Mr. Jacob said. “People who really need additional help and support don’t have access to food relief during the week.”
The rise in financial hardship, he noted, is contributing to the demand for food relief. “The rental market is so high, and many people are struggling to find employment or pay their bills.”
Call for Volunteers and Community Support
Mr. Jacob is calling on volunteers to join the new kitchen’s team, including those with food handler certification. He also welcomed support from local businesses to ensure the kitchen can meet the growing need in the community.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration among local support agencies to address the needs of vulnerable residents in Sunbury. “It’s crucial that we all work together to help those in need,” he said.
Kitchen Details and Operation Hours
Starting on March 12, the new kitchen will be open from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Wednesday at the Sunbury Youth Centre, located at 51-53 Evans Street, Sunbury. The service is expected to provide vital food relief for those struggling in the community.
