The upcoming Osaka Expo, running from April 13 to October 13, 2025, is set to feature high-end cuisine that promises to captivate food enthusiasts. With over 200,000 visitors expected daily from nearly 160 countries, food will be a central attraction at the event, especially with luxurious dining experiences on offer.
Exclusive Dining: A Taste of Luxury
Among the highlights is a prestigious 30,000 yen course (around $200), which will offer guests a taste of Japan’s finest culinary creations. In addition, a unique “kaitenzushi” (conveyor belt sushi) experience will showcase sushi, signature dishes, and craft beverages from around the world. These premium dining options are designed to cater to a variety of tastes while highlighting the global food culture at the Expo.
Overcoming Challenges and Preparing for Visitors
Despite some challenges, such as a lower-than-expected participation rate from vendors, organizers remain determined to provide exceptional culinary experiences. The Expo site, located on the artificial island of Yumeshima, spans an area equivalent to 40 Koshien Stadiums, offering plenty of space for food lovers to explore. Although visitors are welcome to bring their own meals, the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition is ensuring that Japanese food culture, alongside global cuisines, is well-represented.
Dining Options and Experiences
Around 70 food and beverage businesses will operate stalls at the Expo, selected through a public solicitation. Lounge & Dining, a top-tier operator, will offer an exclusive 30,000 yen course with sushi and teppanyaki dishes. The experience promises an upscale atmosphere with a “quiet environment” and exceptional service. For those looking for more casual dining, buffets starting at 8,000 yen will also be available without reservations.
Cutting-Edge Culinary Technology
Kura Sushi, a leading sushi chain, will take part by offering an innovative international kaitenzushi experience. Featuring the longest rotating conveyor belt ever installed—stretching 135 meters with 338 seats—this experience will also showcase new food technologies. Visitors can expect not only sushi but also a range of dishes from around 70 countries, including Cuba’s traditional ropa vieja (beef stew).
Catering to Diverse Diets
In recognition of the diverse needs of visitors, some restaurants will provide halal meals prepared according to Islamic dietary laws, as well as vegan options. This ensures that all visitors can enjoy a satisfying meal during their visit.
Food from Around the World
Expo pavilions from countries like Italy, Kuwait, and South Korea will also offer culinary delights. The Czech Republic, renowned for its Bohemian crystal glassware and beer culture, will showcase its famous beers, adding another layer of international flavor to the Expo’s dining offerings.
Sustainability and Food Diversity
The Expo association has set strict screening criteria for restaurant operators, focusing on sustainability efforts such as reducing food waste and ensuring a diverse menu. While 39 restaurant spots were initially expected to be filled, only 26 were occupied after two rounds of applications. A third call for applications was issued, extending the application period and offering incentives like free facility use and reduced payment rates based on sales. By the end of January, only three spots remained unfilled.
A Culinary Destination for Expo Visitors
“Food is one of the main attractions of the Expo,” an Expo association official remarked. With a variety of dining options and cultural cuisines on display, the Expo promises to be a must-visit for food lovers, offering something for every taste and dietary preference.
