A new coastal Mexican restaurant is set to open in Baton Rouge next month. Veracruz Restaurant, located at 3510 Drusilla Lane, will officially open its doors on March 6. The eatery is inspired by Veracruz, a coastal state in eastern Mexico known for its fusion of Spanish, Caribbean, and indigenous flavors.
A Taste of Veracruz’s Coastal Cuisine
The Baton Rouge menu will mirror the vibrant flavors of Veracruz, featuring fresh seafood in various dishes such as ceviches, tacos, and skewers. Signature entrees will include Arroz a la Tumbada, a take on Spanish paella, and Pescado a la Veracruzana, a fillet topped with tomato sauce, capers, and olives. Additionally, diners can expect quesadillas and fried plantains, available in both sweet and savory options. Some dishes will be cooked in a brasa oven imported from Spain, and the menu will change with the seasons.
Owner William Mealer explains that the restaurant’s tagline, Mar y Tierra—meaning “Sea and Land”—reflects the fusion of coastal and land-based ingredients at Veracruz.
A Coastal Dining Experience
Mealer drew inspiration for the restaurant’s design from his childhood in Honduras and his love for the coast. The interior, designed by Laura Cedor Interiors, showcases a clean, coastal atmosphere, featuring beachy blues and natural tones. Wicker chandeliers and pendant lights hang overhead, while walls are adorned with hand-painted art and murals. A rainforest mural by Cuban artist Alberto Paret greets customers at the entrance, and the restrooms feature custom murals that complement the restaurant’s aquatic theme.
Veracruz offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor diners can enjoy black-and-white bistro chairs, while the indoor area features natural wood stools at the bar and plush teal booths in the dining area. The seating is arranged in intimate vignettes, creating a welcoming atmosphere for guests.
A Family Venture in the Restaurant Industry
William Mealer, who also owns La Carreta Mid City, and his wife Charlene Mealer, have over 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry. The couple previously worked with Besh Restaurant Group (now BRG Hospitality) in New Orleans for eight years.
Charlene reflects on their teamwork, saying, “We keep each other going. If one of us loses steam, the other raises us up. We push each other every day.”
Veracruz’s New Home in Drusilla Shopping Center
The Veracruz concept has been in development for about a year. After considering multiple locations in Baton Rouge, the Mealers chose a space in Drusilla Shopping Center that was previously home to VooDoo BBQ. They were drawn to the building’s intimate size and unique character, which they feel will add charm to the dining experience.
“I think this area is fantastic,” says William Mealer.
Veracruz’s Grand Opening
Veracruz Restaurant will open its doors to the public on Thursday, March 6, and will be open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
