Hong Kong Health Authorities Investigate Food Poisoning Cluster Affecting 13 People

by admin

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of Hong Kong’s Department of Health has initiated an investigation into a food poisoning outbreak that has affected 13 individuals. The investigation emphasizes the importance of maintaining high standards of personal, food, and environmental hygiene to reduce the risk of foodborne diseases.

The affected group consists of four men and nine women, aged between 34 and 64, who began showing symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhoea between 24 and 66 hours after dining at Ying Garden Seafood Dining in To Kwa Wan on January 17. Five individuals sought medical care, although none were hospitalized.

Preliminary investigations by the CHP revealed that the group had consumed a variety of dishes, including “siu mei” (roast chicken and barbecued pork), along with other hot items. Inspectors from both the CHP and the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) visited the restaurant, collecting food samples for analysis while reviewing the restaurant’s cooking practices and hygiene standards.

Initial findings from the CFS could not rule out the possibility of cross-contamination during food preparation. As a precaution, the CFS has instructed the restaurant to suspend the serving of the implicated roast chicken and barbecued pork. Additionally, the restaurant is required to thoroughly clean and disinfect its premises, and staff will receive training on food safety and hygiene procedures.
