B.C. Ferries is set to launch a new restaurant, Seascapes Lounge, on its two Spirit-class vessels, the Spirit of British Columbia and the Spirit of Vancouver Island, which operate on the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen route. The new dining area will replace the Pacific Buffet, which was closed during the pandemic in 2020, and is expected to open before the summer season.
Seascapes Lounge promises a more refined dining experience, featuring a “quiet, more relaxed setting” with comfortable seating and a curated selection of food and beverages. The lounge aims to create a distinct atmosphere separate from other dining areas on the ferry, catering to passengers who seek a calm and peaceful environment during their travels.
Customer Feedback Drives the Change
The decision to replace the Pacific Buffet follows a public survey conducted by B.C. Ferries in 2023, which received over 10,000 responses. According to Melanie Lucia, B.C. Ferries’ vice-president of customer experience, passengers expressed a desire for a special space to enjoy their meals.
“Customers have been clear in their feedback — they want a space that is special and distinct from the other dining areas, offering a quiet and comfortable setting,” Lucia said.
Seascapes Lounge Features
For a $6 entry fee, passengers will enjoy unlimited coffee, tea, and fountain beverages. The entry fee also grants access to a curated food and drink menu that includes local beer, wine, and non-alcoholic options. The lounge will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with passengers placing their orders at the cashier and collecting their meals.
Although the menu is still being finalized, it is expected to include:
- Continental breakfast options
- Meat and cheese plates
- Sandwiches and salads
- Rice bowls
- Desserts
Menu items will range from $8 to $9 for snacks or desserts, and up to $20 for entrees.
Enhancing the Ferry Experience
The Seascapes Lounge will be located in the space previously occupied by the Pacific Buffet and will feature around 200 seats. In response to the expansion, B.C. Ferries will add three additional positions per shift to accommodate the new dining area.
B.C. Ferries expects the Seascapes Lounge to generate approximately $1.3 million annually, helping the company meet rising operational costs while also offering passengers a unique and comfortable dining option. The new lounge aims to reduce congestion in the Coastal Cafe and provide an upgraded experience for ferry riders.
Expected Opening and Future Plans
The Seascapes Lounge is set to open before the summer season on the Spirit of British Columbia and Spirit of Vancouver Island. Minimal renovations are required to convert the space. Depending on the success of the new lounge, B.C. Ferries may consider introducing a Seascapes Lounge on the Coastal Celebration vessel in the future.
With this new addition, B.C. Ferries aims to meet customer expectations while ensuring financial stability and improving the overall ferry experience for passengers.
