For decades, Johnson’s Corner in Johnstown, Colorado, has served as a pitstop for travelers along Interstate 25, offering comfort food and famous cinnamon rolls. Since its opening in 1952, the family-owned restaurant has earned a loyal following among truck drivers, locals, and tourists alike. However, the restaurant is now closed for a major transformation and will soon rebrand as a Black Bear Diner, though it will still retain many of its beloved features.
A Shift in Ownership and Future Plans
The transition from Johnson’s Corner to Black Bear Diner has been in the works for some time. The restaurant was sold to TravelCenters of America in 2014, and Mike Oster, the site general manager, noted that the closure was anticipated for about a year. The reason for the closure, he explained, was straightforward: it was time for the restaurant to undergo a facelift and a refresh.
The plan is to remodel the establishment and reopen it as part of the Black Bear Diner chain by April. While the restaurant will be rebranded, Oster emphasized that several key aspects of Johnson’s Corner would remain, including the iconic cinnamon rolls, which are still being baked at the on-site bakery during the renovation. The flavor of the month for the cinnamon rolls is blueberry.
What’s Staying the Same?
Despite the rebranding, many aspects of the original Johnson’s Corner will continue to live on. The famous cinnamon rolls, apple fritter bread, and cakes will still be available, keeping the spirit of the original restaurant intact. The truck stop and gas station will not undergo any changes, and the Johnson’s Corner sign, which has become a well-known roadside landmark, will continue to stand proudly. Many of the restaurant’s employees will also return to the new Black Bear Diner in April, ensuring some continuity for loyal customers.
The Buc-ee’s Impact
While some locals initially blamed the opening of Colorado’s first Buc-ee’s for the closure of Johnson’s Corner, Mike Oster clarified that the two businesses aren’t directly connected. In fact, Buc-ee’s has indirectly benefited Johnson’s Corner. Since Buc-ee’s doesn’t have a sit-down restaurant, many visitors who came to check out the massive convenience store ended up dining at Johnson’s Corner. Buc-ee’s employees have also been known to frequent the restaurant for meals. According to Oster, the arrival of Buc-ee’s actually helped boost cinnamon roll sales at Johnson’s Corner.
The Black Bear Diner Difference
Once the rebranding is complete, Johnson’s Corner will take on the look and feel of a Black Bear Diner, a chain known for its log-cabin themed dining rooms and menu items inspired by bears. The diner’s menu typically includes comfort food options with playful, bear-themed names, offering a different vibe compared to the homey, one-of-a-kind atmosphere of Johnson’s Corner. While some online commentators have expressed concern about the change, others are curious to see how the new Black Bear Diner will shape up.
In the end, while the name and branding will change, the essence of Johnson’s Corner, including its famous cinnamon rolls, will live on, ensuring the beloved restaurant’s legacy continues in a new form.
