Com Ga Houston, a popular Vietnamese restaurant that specializes in the traditional chicken-and-rice dish com ga, has opened its fourth location in Olathe, Kansas. This marks a significant expansion for the restaurant, which was originally founded in Houston but has now branched out into other cities, including Duluth, Georgia, and Arlington, Texas.
A New Chapter in Olathe, Kansas
The new Com Ga Houston location in Olathe opened in late December 2024, taking over a former Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at 15204 W. 119th St., roughly 22 miles southwest of Kansas City. The Kansas City Star reports that this new restaurant brings the authentic flavors of Vietnamese cuisine to the region, offering the signature com ga dish, pho, congee, and other hearty soups.
A Decade of Success
Com Ga Houston, which originally opened more than a decade ago, made the move to 11403 Bellaire Blvd. in Houston’s Asiatown in 2022. The same year, it expanded nationally by launching a franchise location in Duluth, Georgia, through the efforts of Khoa Do, a Vietnamese-American who trained under the restaurant’s owner to master its recipes. This location quickly gained praise for its authenticity.
Expansion and Franchise Growth
In 2023, Com Ga Houston also expanded to Arlington, Texas. The Olathe, Kansas location is operated by franchisees Khameew Thiphommachanh and Nhi Ngo, who continue the restaurant’s legacy of offering traditional Vietnamese dishes with a focus on high-quality ingredients and authentic flavors.
What’s Next for Com Ga Houston?
As Com Ga Houston grows beyond Texas and into other states, the question remains whether Houston-based Vietnamese restaurants can make a broader impact on the national food scene. Houston has long been a hub for Vietnamese cuisine, with local businesses like Saigon Hustle and Oui Banh Mi working to bring the flavors of Vietnam to a wider audience. Com Ga Houston’s expansion could be a sign of things to come for the Vietnamese food scene in the U.S., as restaurants from Houston aim to compete on a national level with major food chains.
The Olathe opening is another chapter in the restaurant’s success, and it highlights the growing popularity of Vietnamese cuisine across the country, especially in areas with diverse and expanding food scenes. It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue, but Com Ga Houston’s rapid expansion is certainly a sign that it has found a dedicated following outside of its home base.
