Cumberland House in York Could Become New Riverside Restaurant

by Ella

A Grade I-listed building by the River Ouse in York, known as Cumberland House, could soon be transformed into a riverside restaurant. This comes following a recently lodged licensing application by business owners Shaun Robert Binns and Jamie-Leigh Binns, who are already familiar with the local restaurant scene through their ownership of Lil’s Bar and Bistro next door.

Plans for Cumberland House

The Binns have proposed turning the four-storey Georgian mansion, which dates back to approximately 1710, into a new dining destination. The restaurant would seat up to 30 people, providing a cozy and intimate dining experience with views of the picturesque River Ouse.

Property’s History and Recent Sale

Cumberland House has a rich history, dating back over 300 years. The property went on the market last year, with expectations of offers surpassing £1 million. It was sold by North Yorkshire-based property developers, Helmsley Group, who had owned the building prior to the sale.

With the new licensing application in place, it appears that Cumberland House could soon begin a new chapter as a sought-after riverside restaurant, contributing to York’s vibrant dining scene.
