Norway Wants to Ban Unhealthy Food Ads Targeting Teens: How Far Will It Go?

by Ella

Norway is on track to implement one of Europe’s most stringent bans on junk food advertising aimed at children and teenagers. Unlike the UK’s planned restrictions, Norway’s proposal extends the ban’s age limit to 18 and includes a wide range of unhealthy foods, including candy and sugary cereals. This mandatory ban would replace the current voluntary measures and impose significant fines for non-compliance. The rule also incorporates “nutrient thresholds” to classify unhealthy foods, potentially setting a new standard for food marketing regulations.

While this move aligns with global health recommendations, it raises concerns among food industry stakeholders about its implementation and impact. The proposal, still open for public comment, will be finalized by late 2025. Critics argue it may lead to complications in distinguishing targeted marketing and could disadvantage local businesses compared to international competitors. Supporters hope it will significantly curb unhealthy food consumption and related health issues, echoing calls for broader policy measures to address childhood obesity comprehensively.
